Journey: Journalism Bootcamp is an intensive 10-day journalism course for Czech and international students. The 8th iteration of Journey has taken place in Prague, the Czech Republic, between August 5-15, 2023.

About the program

The Journey journalism training aims at imparting practical skills that are helpful for further career development of aspiring journalists. It is a unique opportunity for the participants to learn about the latest methods and trends in media work through lectures, workshops, and practical exercises, to build an international network of professional contacts, and to learn from the best in the field.

The course is led by leading experts from renowned global media and agencies such as CNN, The New Yorker, Bloomberg, Reuters, Associated Press, and others, some of them being laureates of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize.

 

 

Who is the Journey program for?

  • Journalism and media studies students who have completed at least two semesters of university / higher vocational education studies and have a serious interest in journalism work.
  • Students of other programs if they have experience working as journalists or if they show strong motivation to become journalists.
  • For applicants from the following countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, UK, USA, Moldova.
  • Students with fluent knowledge of English.

What is good to know?

  • An expert committee will consider the received applications that meet all criteria and select the participants. We will contact the selected participants by May 31, 2023, and subsequently communicate the logistic details of their participation to them.
  • Students accepted into the program will receive full scholarship from the Bakala Foundation, covering expenses associated with the participation in the course, including the travel expenses to Prague, meals and accommodation, study materials, and visa fees.

  • The application has to be filled out in English, which is the working language of the whole course.
  • The deadline for online applications for the 8th year of the program is 11:59 p.m. (CET) on May 7, 2023. Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will not be included in the selection process.

FAQs

What will I be asked to do, if accepted into the program?

Fellows selected into the program will be asked to actively participate in all the workshops and exercises and to hand in an individual journalistic project – a report on a given subject that each fellow will work on under the tutelage of Journey Program’s Mentor. The project proposal is a part of the online application and is explained in more detail there.

The length of the final submission should be between 800 and 1000 words. The deadline for the final project submission will be approximately three weeks after the end of the bootcamp. Submissions will be evaluated by an independent jury and the best works will be rewarded.

When and where will the summer school be taking place?

The Journey: Journalism Bootcamp will be taking place at the beautiful Vila Grébovka, where both accommodation and most of the seminars will be provided. The villa is located near the historic centre of Prague, Czech Republic. Participants will arrive on August 5 and depart on August 15, 2023.

Who receives the scholarship and what does the scholarship cover?

Every applicant accepted into the program will receive a full scholarship from the foundation. The scholarship covers accommodation and meals for the duration of the summer camp, travel expenses such as return flight tickets or bus or train tickets to Prague, transfer within Prague to and from the accommodation facilities upon arrival and departure, and all study materials needed during the course.
